Photo to Line Art
Create clean outlines from a photo, then prepare transparency and larger design exports. Learn raster cleanup, vector tracing and print-size checks.

Photo to line art is often a design task rather than a coloring activity. A pet portrait might become part of a greeting card; a building outline could sit over a colored invitation; a product sketch may need to fit a brochure. These uses demand clean silhouettes, controlled marks, and an export that works with the surrounding layout. A white rectangle behind the drawing or fuzzy enlarged edges can make an otherwise attractive outline unusable.
The tool below gives you a detailed black-on-white raster starting point. This guide then explains the extra work needed for a transparent background, crisp resizing, and a commercial handoff. The current tool generates with a 1K image setting; it does not directly export transparent artwork, native vectors, or a guaranteed 300 dpi full-page asset. Keep the original PNG, clean its contours, and choose a raster or vector finishing workflow based on the final size and placement of your design.
Prepare a source for a useful outline
Choose a silhouette that reads clearly without color. Side-lit architecture, a pet against a plain wall, or a product on an uncluttered surface can reveal the boundaries you need. Crop out background objects that are not part of the design. Reflective glass, glossy packaging, and camouflage patterns can make apparent edges ambiguous.
The Detailed preset requests finer features, but it is not an exact technical tracing service. Check geometry, lettering, logos, and proportions against your source. For a diagram or identity mark that must be exact, redraw critical paths from the original rather than treating generated outlines as measurements.
Make a transparent background after downloading
Download PNG and keep a copy before editing. In an image editor, decide whether you need transparency only outside the subject or behind every black line. Those are different assets: an isolated sticker can keep white interior areas, while an overlay may need all white areas removed.
For an isolated subject, select and delete only the connected exterior background. For a line-only overlay, use a luminance-based mask that makes white transparent while preserving dark contours. Inspect anti-aliased edges over both dark and colored backgrounds, then remove any pale halo. Export PNG with its alpha channel enabled; JPG cannot store transparency. The tool's printable PDF keeps a white page and does not perform this step.
High resolution: calculate the actual placement size
A dpi label alone does not add pixels. For a 4-inch-wide placement at 300 pixels per inch, you need 1,200 pixels across the artwork. A full 8.5 × 11-inch raster at that density needs 2,550 × 3,300 pixels. Measure the actual image area, not just the sheet size; margins can make it smaller.
For small cards, the original raster may be adequate after a print proof. For larger work, vector tracing is often a useful finishing route: threshold the image, trace the contours, then remove specks, close gaps, and simplify excessive nodes. Save the cleaned editable paths and export at your required dimensions. Upsampling a PNG can smooth pixels, but it cannot recover missing source detail or guarantee sharp commercial printing.
Prepare a commercial handoff
Deliver the original generation, your cleaned master, and the final export as separate files. Tell the recipient the dimensions, whether transparency includes the white interior areas, and which elements you manually corrected. Avoid presenting an unedited 1K raster as a fully scalable vector.
Confirm rights to the source photograph and permission for any third-party content before using the design commercially. Our terms do not guarantee exclusive rights to AI output. The U.S. Copyright Office ties protection for AI-assisted material to sufficient human-authored expression; generating a file is not by itself proof of exclusive copyright.
Frequently asked questions
Can I turn a photo into line art with a transparent background?
You can generate the black-on-white starting image here, then remove or mask the white background in an editor and export an alpha PNG. Direct transparent-background generation is not currently available. Decide whether to preserve white areas inside the subject first.
Does the tool export SVG or vector line art?
No. Downloads are raster PNG and printable PDF. A PDF container does not make the embedded image a vector. Trace and clean the PNG in a vector editor if you need editable paths or reliable scaling for a larger layout.
Can I get a 300 dpi line-art image for printing?
Calculate the required pixel dimensions from the printed image size. Changing a file's dpi metadata does not create detail. The current 1K generation setting may suit a small placement; larger commercial assets need further vector cleanup or a suitable redraw and print proof.
Why do my outlines have a white halo on a colored background?
Partly white edge pixels can remain after a basic color selection. Use a mask that accounts for edge luminance, inspect on several background colors, and refine the fringe. Keep a master copy so you can adjust the mask without repeatedly damaging the contours.
Can I use generated line art in a commercial design?
Check your rights to adapt the source and any depicted third-party material, then review the output before delivery. A subscription covers processing rather than exclusive ownership or rights clearance. Read the terms and retain records of your source permission and manual work.
